At the heart of the programme is music that feels instantly alive because so much of it grows out of folk traditions – tunes and rhythms shaped by dance, storytelling and everyday life. You’ll hear this in Ligeti’s Romanian Concerto, where Eastern European folk melodies are transformed into something dazzling and rhythmically infectious, and in Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus, which gently reimagines an old English folk tune into music of extraordinary depth and stillness.
Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4 adds a sense of outdoor freshness and playful hunting calls, brought to life by soloist Chris Gough, Principal Horn of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, while Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony balances wit, elegance and drive in a score that feels both classic and full of character. Guiding the performance is conductor Stefano Boccacchi, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Leverhulme Conducting Fellow, shaping a programme that shows how folk-inspired ideas can be transformed into something rich and deeply compelling.
